Fostering Community Awarded 2018 Community Impact Award
The Central Louisiana Community Foundation has selected Fostering Community as the recipient of its 2018 Community Impact Award. This is the eighth year the Community Impact Award has been awarded. Fostering Community will receive $50,000.
Fostering Community is a non-profit organization primarily focused on engaging the local community in the foster care system and creating a community of support for foster families. Fostering Community started The Foster Care Closet in Alexandria, operates The Louisiana Heart Gallery in the Alexandria Region, and helps children in foster care and foster families in many different capacities.
Through the partnership with CLCF, Fostering Community will be able to expand their projects to seven additional parishes in the Central Louisiana area. The parishes which will be covered are Avoyelles, Catahoula, Concordia, Grant, LaSalle, Rapides, Vernon, and Winn. The projects include Hygiene Closets, Safe Sleep Project, and Birthday in a Box. Hygiene Closets will be set up in each Department of Children and Family Services office in the seven parishes. The goal of these hygiene closets is to meet the immediate needs of children as they are placed in foster care for the first time. Some of the items that will be available in the Hygiene Closets are pacifiers, blankets, diapers, toothbrushes, soap, wipes, toys, and clothing.
The Hygiene Closet expansion will begin with Avoyelles Parish in January of 2019 with plans to expand to a new parish every two months until each parish in the region has one.
